HANGING YOUR IMAGE

There are several factors that you might want to consider when hanging your fine art photo to ensure a cohesive and visually pleasing display. Here are some tips that might help you plan the placement of your fine art photography.

Assess the Space
Take into account the room's size, layout, architectural features, and existing decor elements. This evaluation helps determine the most suitable location for hanging the artwork.

Identify the Focal Points

It helps to identify the focal points in the room, such as a fireplace, a feature wall, or an area with high visibility. These focal points often serve as ideal spots to showcase fine art photography and draw attention to the artwork.

Determine the Placement

The focal points and the room's layout will help you decide on the specific placement of your photograph. Consider the desired visual impact, balance, and composition. For example, you might choose a larger piece to be the centerpiece above a fireplace or create a gallery wall arrangement on a feature wall.

Height and Placement

The center of the artwork should typically be at eye level for optimal viewing, which is around 145-152 cm (57-60 inches) from the floor. However, you might make adjustments based on the specific elements in the room, such as furniture or architectural features. When hanging, mark the height using a pencil. I always measure and mark twice just to be sure! Then to be more accurate, measure the distance between the middle of the image, and where it sits on the nail and if it’s a large piece, you might want to hang it slightly higher to take this into consideration. I would always recommend having a professional hang heavy or large works to avoid damaging your walls!

Consider the Color Scheme

I like to take into consideration the existing color scheme of the room when selecting an image for a client. So you might consider whether the photographs should blend with the color palette to create a harmonious look or provide contrast to make a bold statement. The color scheme of the artwork should complement and enhance the overall aesthetic of the space.

Style and Theme

It’s aesthetically pleasing to try and choose and image that aligns with the desired style and theme of the room. You may consider the genre, subject matter, or artistic style of the photographs to create a cohesive visual narrative within the space. For example, a contemporary room may benefit from abstract or minimalist photography, while a traditional space may call for classic or vintage-inspired pieces. Landscapes often work in most settings.

Lighting and Accentuation

Consider the lighting conditions in the room and how to accentuate the image effectively. I have had clients who have added specific lighting, such as picture lights or track lighting, to highlight the photographs and create a focal point. Proper lighting helps enhance the colors, details, and overall impact of the artwork. Choosing the print material depending on the light conditions also is a vital element.

Balance and Composition
Achieving a balanced and visually pleasing composition is essential. Consider the size, shape, and arrangement of the photographs to ensure a cohesive and harmonious display. Experiment with different configurations, proportions, and spacing to achieve the desired aesthetic result.

Tools & Hanging Tips
To hang photography in your home, you'll need a few essential tools to ensure a successful and secure installation. Here are the key tools you'll need and a step-by-step guide on how to hang photography:

Tools Needed:

1. Measuring Tape: Used to measure the wall and determine the desired placement of the photographs.

2. Pencil: Used to mark the spots where the hanging hardware will be installed.

3. Level: Helps ensure that the photographs are straight and properly aligned.

4. Hanging Hardware: This can include picture hooks, nails, adhesive hooks, wall anchors, or a French cleat system, depending on the weight and size of the photographs and the type of walls in your home.

5. Hammer or Drill: Required to install the hanging hardware securely.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Choose Placement: Determine the desired placement of the photographs on the wall. Consider factors such as the room's layout, lighting, and visual balance. Use a measuring tape to mark the spots where you want to hang the photographs.

2. Measure and Mark: Measure the height and spacing between the photographs and make light pencil marks on the wall accordingly. Ensure the marks are level by using a level tool. This will help you achieve a straight and visually pleasing arrangement.

3. Install Hanging Hardware: Based on the weight and size of your photographs, choose the appropriate hanging hardware. For smaller and medium-sized photographs, picture hooks or nails are commonly used. Heavier or larger pieces may require wall anchors or a French cleat system for added support. Most of my images come with a similar hanging system that easy to use and balance. You can view the hanging system here.

4. Hang the Photographs: Start with one photograph at a time. Position the photograph on the wall, aligning it with the pencil marks. For picture hooks or nails, place the hook or nail at the desired spot and gently hammer it into the wall. Ensure the hook or nail is secure and can support the weight of the photograph.

5. Check for Level: After hanging each photograph, use the level to make sure it is straight and properly aligned. Adjust if needed.

6. Fine-tune and Arrange: Step back and evaluate the arrangement. Make any necessary adjustments to the placement or spacing of the photographs to achieve the desired look. Pay attention to the overall balance and composition.

By following these steps and using the appropriate tools, you can hang your photography securely and create a visually appealing display in your home.
